Stick and Rudder

Stick and Rudder

This section covers the actual mechanics of flying an airplane, including aerodynamics and weight and balance. Remember that the Flight Bag, which contains dozens of guides to flight maneuvers, is part of this course as well.

Stick and rudder skills are an essential skill for all aviators. Pilots who fly frequently usually stay fairly proficient with stick and rudder flying. Those that fly less frequently may pick up a little rust. Just this section appropriately as it applies to you.

That said, we highly recommend making a habit of refining your stick and rudder skills regularly. Do stalls. Do steep turns. Learn to perfect a falling leaf stall. The more comfortable you are with your airplane, the better, and the safer you are. We can assure you, as instructors, that it’s a little unnerving when we do a Flight Review for a pilot that is still current and they can’t keep the airplane in control during a stall. Fortunately, none of it is rocket science. It just requires a little practice!
