National Airspace System (NAS)

Airspace is established to separate different kinds of traffic, improve operational efficiency and maintain safety. We use a VFR sectional chart to determine what type of airspace we are in at a given time, and what types we will encounter along our flight. However, our sectional chart will not tell us various critical information such as entry requirements, ATC requirements, weather minima for VFR flight, lateral dimensions and equipment needs. These we must know ahead of time and memorize. Use Flashcards!

This lesson provides an overview of the NAS, and then a detailed description of each of the six main types of airspace. We’ll then talk about Special Use Airspace which consists of six other, less-common types airspace common around military operations, high traffic density areas and areas of national security.
